To ensure you receive the best price for your fattening pigs, it's crucial to deliver them in the right weight range. If the pigs are out of this range you will get lower price for the animal. Currently, weight determination relies heavily on the experience and judgment of the pig farmer, or involves removing all animals from their pens, weighing them, and then returning them. Although this will give very precise information it is labor-intensive. Moreover, not all the pigs show the same growth.This means that pigs at the same weight can differ quite a bit in age, sometimes spanning up to 5 weeks. The question is: How can we quickly and accurately determine the weight of a fattening pig to get the best price?

OptiScan

With OptiScan you can take the weight of the fattening pig in the pen. This means you do not have to take the pigs out of the pen to get an accurate weight. OptiScan is a 3D camera that determines the weight of the pig with 97% or 98% accuracy. You simply enter the pen, scan the weights of the animals and mark those with the correct weight. The measurements can be recorded and read out on the computer. This method allows for stress-free measurement of the animals, as they do not need to be moved.

Accuracy

The OptiScan technology, developed by H+L Agrar in Germany, has been available on the market for some time. Utilizing an algorithm based on data collected from over 6,300 animals and more than 10 million weighings, OptiScan stands as a highly accurate weighing device. During testing and comparison with mechanical weighing, it was observed that an animal weighed several times a day can have different kind of weights. It can even differ several kilos. This occurs as a result of stomach and bladder filling. OptiScan does not include these deviations.

OptiMarker - Automatic Marking

If you are looking for a way to apply this camera for automatic weighing and marking, we can provide OptiMarker for this purpose. The weight is measured every time the pig drinks or passes through a gate. Once the pig reaches the set weight, it is automatically marked, allowing the pig farmer to easily verify whether it has reached the correct weight.

Potential

OptiScan offers a wide range of possibilities for both the present and the future. Cooperl acquired H+L products in 2023 and aims to apply this technology to many more applications. The camera is already equipped with RFID, allowing the weights to be directly linked to the animals. One major advantage of this technology over mechanical weighing is its versatility; we can utilize the animal scan for much more than just weight measurement, a direction in which Cooperl plans to heavily invest.
